Why We Sell Factory-Direct: The Real Cost of a Leather Jacket

Here's a question worth actually sitting with: why does one leather jacket cost $150 and a nearly identical one, same lambskin, same stitching, cost $500?

It's not the leather. It's not the labor. It's everything that happens between the workshop and the person wearing it.

Following the Money on a $500 Jacket

A typical leather jacket sold through a traditional retail chain passes through several hands before it reaches you, and each one takes a cut:

The factory sells it to a wholesaler at a wholesale price. The wholesaler marks it up and sells it to a distributor. The distributor sells it to the retail brand. The retail brand marks it up again — often doubling or tripling the cost — to cover store leases, staff wages, marketing budgets, and their own profit margin. By the time it reaches a $500 price tag on a store shelf, the actual manufacturing cost of that jacket might be a fraction of what you're paying.

Where the markup goes on a retail leather jacket

None of that spending is dishonest — running physical stores and national ad campaigns costs real money, and someone has to pay for it. But it does mean a meaningful chunk of what you're handing over has nothing to do with the leather on your back.

What We Do Differently

We design, craft, and ship every jacket ourselves — no wholesaler, no distributor, no third-party retail markup layered on top. Our workshop makes the jacket; you're the one who receives it. There's no middle layer taking a cut in between.

That's the entire reason we can sell full-grain lambskin, the same material quality you'd find in jackets priced at $400–$900, for $129–$189.

"So Is the Quality Actually the Same?"

This is the fair question, and it deserves a straight answer: yes, on the things that actually determine quality — the leather itself, the construction, the hardware — and no, on the things that don't. You're not paying for a flagship retail location, a celebrity ad campaign, or three layers of corporate overhead. You are paying for the exact same tanning process, the same cut-and-sew techniques, and the same attention to stitching and hardware that goes into any well-made leather jacket.

Every jacket starts with hand-selected leather — chosen piece by piece, not approved in bulk by someone who never touches the material. From there, it goes through pattern cutting, stitching, and finishing in our own workshop, by people who do this as their trade, not as an assembly-line task split into a hundred disconnected steps. You can read more about that process on our Our Story page.

Why This Matters More Than a Discount

It would be easy to frame this as "we're just cheaper." That undersells it. The bigger point is that the traditional markup structure has quietly convinced people that price and quality are the same thing — that a $500 jacket must be five times better than a $100 one. Sometimes it is. Often, the difference is almost entirely the number of companies that touched it before it reached you.

Cutting out that structure isn't a gimmick. It's just a different way of getting a genuinely well-made product to the people who'll actually wear it, without asking them to fund an entire supply chain of middlemen in the process.

What You're Actually Paying For

When you buy from us, your money goes toward: the leather itself, the people who cut and stitch it, the hardware, the packaging, and getting it shipped to your door. That's a shorter list than most brands can honestly give you — and it's exactly why the price is shorter too.

We back that with the same standards you'd expect from any serious leather brand: genuine full-grain and top-grain materials, real craftsmanship, and a 30-day return window if something isn't right. We just don't think you should have to pay a middleman markup to get any of it.
